Part One: Navigating New York City with a Peanut Allergy: Top Peanut-Free Restaurants to Explore in NYC

As we all know, traveling with a peanut allergy can sometimes feel daunting, especially when visiting a bustling metropolis like New York City. However, the Big Apple is not only a vibrant city with endless opportunities for adventure but also a place where you can find a variety of peanut-free dining options. Having visited NYC many times over the years, we feel that we have only scratched the surface, but we’ve managed to build a pretty good portfolio of peanut-safe options. From fine dining to a quick bagel lunch and everything in between, we’ve discovered a plethora of choices in New York. Since there are too many options for one post, I will be sharing some of our favorite peanut-free restaurants and treats in New York City in this two-part blog entry, ensuring that your visit is both safe and delicious.

A la Mode Shoppe

I know, it says restaurants in the title, but I had to start with A la Mode Shop, and besides, who doesn’t like dessert before dinner every once in a while? If you’re craving ice cream, head to A la Mode Shop, a delightful ice cream parlor that offers a variety of peanut-free flavors. From classic favorites to unique creations, you can cool off with a scoop or two of delicious ice cream without any concerns about peanuts. We tend to stop by multiple times per visit. They even have toppings, including some from Vermont Nut Free Chocolate. Make it a complete meal by visiting Sophia Pizza located just around the corner, and discussed a little further down.

John’s of Times Square

John’s of Times Square is a renowned pizzeria that has been serving delicious, coal-fired brick oven pizzas for decades. Rest assured, they are highly attentive to food allergies and maintain a peanut-free environment. A detailed allergy statement is available in the FAQ section on their website. Enjoy their mouthwatering pizzas, garlic rolls, pasta dishes, and other Italian specialties while savoring the rich history and ambiance of this iconic restaurant. It gets busy, and reservations are generally not accepted, so plan ahead and leave time if you have somewhere else to be.

Crompton Ale House

Located in Manhattan’s Chelsey neighborhood, the Crompton Ale House offers a warm and friendly atmosphere along with a diverse menu. They are committed to accommodating food allergies, including peanuts. With an array of tasty options, you can indulge in their delicious burgers, salads, and mouthwatering appetizers without worry.

The Smith

The Smith is a popular restaurant with several locations in New York City, We visited the 1150 Broadway site and it is a great choice for those with peanut allergies. With a menu that focuses on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, you can enjoy a variety of dishes, including seafood, steaks, and vegetarian options, in a safe and peanut allergy-aware environment.

Tacombi

Craving Mexican cuisine? Look no further than Tacombi. With several locations throughout the city, including one in the Empire State Building, this lively eatery serves up authentic tacos, quesadillas, and other Mexican delights in a peanut-free environment. With a casual atmosphere and vibrant decor, Tacombi is a must-visit for those seeking a taste of Mexico in the heart of New York City. Boucherie

La Grande Boucherie

Another restaurant option with several locations to choose from. We visited the one on West 53rd, just steps outside of one of our go-to hotels. For a touch of French cuisine, visit La Grande Boucherie in Midtown. This elegant brasserie offers a peanut-free dining experience, featuring a menu of classic French dishes made with the finest ingredients. Indulge in their flavorful entrees, seafood, and classic appetizers. The location also makes it a very popular choice for anyone looking to complete an evening on Broadway with an upscale meal.

Margaritaville Times Square

Experience the vibrant and laid-back atmosphere of Margaritaville in the heart of Times Square. This restaurant is known for its tropical vibes, signature margaritas, and an extensive menu that caters to various dietary needs, including those with peanut allergies. Enjoy delicious seafood, burgers, nachos, and Caribbean-inspired dishes while soaking in the lively ambiance.

Bierhaus NYC

Bierhaus NYC is associated with Hofbrau Brewery, and the famous Hofbrauhaus, which we visited while in Munich. If you are looking to experience a taste of Bavaria, Bierhaus NYC is the place to go. Located near Grand Central Terminal, this German beer hall offers a wide selection of beers and a menu featuring traditional German dishes. With their commitment to allergen safety, you can enjoy a hearty meal without any worries about peanuts. We recommend the pretzels, schnitzel, and of course the spaetzle.

Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC

We originally visited the Orlando location of this sweet haven for those with food allergies and dietary. The original is located in the heart of NYC. This delightful bakery offers a mouthwatering array of treats that are gluten-free, vegan, and free from common allergens like peanuts. Erin McKenna’s Bakery is a testament to the fact that delicious desserts can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of dietary preferences.

Like most major cities, there are lots of quick, safe options such as Chipotle and many easily accessible grocery stores as well. NYC seems to have Whole Food locations on every other corner!
